Mall Maladies

Our temporary apartment is right in the middle of the city. The Petronas Twin Towers are next door, as is the KLCC park. For food shopping, however, I have to go to what seems like the biggest, busiest mall in the world, Suria Mall. Not my idea of heaven. Still, it’s only temporary! I could not take a photo because they don’t let you take photos in there!

So here is my latest inspiration:

Mall Maladies

Caged with a million flightless birds
movement is bleak.
Journey. Arrhythmic.
Destinations disappoint.
That hot stink of sweetness clings and cloys.
Sickly durian fug knocks me awry,
surprises me,
every time.

I battle on wings down
towards the prize
of shrink-wrapped aubergine,
designer pricetagged.
It bends a little, like me,
so I tolerate that frost of freezing
on a polystyrene tray of Australian minced beef.

Twice weekly this must be endured,
for man must eat
and kitchen-time contains a whiff of freedom
from all this.

  1. Hi Jo,
I’m a Finnish journalist currently living as an expat here in Kuala Lumpur. I’m writing a story about portable careers for the Finns in Malaysia quarterly, and I would love to interview you for the story. Sorry to send you an interview request in a blog post comment like this, but I tried an e-mail address and a couple of phone numbers on your website before, but didn’t get replies.

Could you please send me an e-mail if you think you have the time to answer a few questions about portable careers in the coming weeks?

    Best regards,
    Anna von Weissenberg

PS: Welcome to this crazy wonderful city of ours 🙂
